Shrimps x Habitat: 5 of the best bits from the new collection

It is the brand’s second collaboration together after a sell-out debut in 2018

Following on from the success of the first collection in July 2018, Shrimps and Habitat have teamed up once again for another offering of eccentric and playful homeware. 

The two British brands are both renowned for their quality designs - Shrimps most notably in the world of fashion where its  faux-fur coats and pearl-structured box bags fly off the shelves season after season.

Now, for winter 2020, the household-name brands have come together again to release a hotly anticipated follow up to the debut collection - this time inspired by 1970’s Palm Springs in California, and weaving the material of the moment -rattan - throughout.

Hannah Weiland, founder of Shrimps said the inspiration this time has brought “a very different feel to our previous capsule collection.” “Handwoven rattan is the main focus of this season – a material that I love and have filled my own home with – mixed with an optimistic colour palette of sunshine yellow, vanilla cream and sage green with touches of soft pink and sky blue. 

“New hand drawn, painted patterns and artworks have been created specially and we’ve worked with Habitat’s design studio to extend the world of Shrimps outside of textiles and into new furniture and lighting pieces for the home,” she added.

The rattan is handwoven in Vietnam, while rugs and cushion come from India, and hand-painted ceramics from Portugal. “Each piece is unique and meant to be mixed into a range of interior styles as [a] standalone statement piece or layered together as part of a curated collection. We’ve had a lot of fun designing these pieces and I hope you enjoy having them,” says Weiland.

Weiland says of the armchair: “I am in love with this armchair with its elegant combination of geometric printed fabric against the natural rattan texture. The bright yellow check really gives this chair personality and brings joy when you look and sit on it”.

Habitat has a long history of working with rattan and for this project Shrimps worked with one of Habitat’s artisanal Vietnamese suppliers to create a versatile cabinet that could fit in a small space. Weiland recommends using it as a drinks cabinet or a linen cabinet in a hallway.

Weiland’s doodle prints were a key part of the first collection - being featured on a range of cushions, prints and rugs. This time round the doodles have been modernised and set to a green colour palette for a new set of soft furnishings. We love the green cushion, which is almost sold out online in less than 24 hours.

If you fancy dipping your toes into the rattan trend but cannot afford, or do not have enough space, for a bigger piece, try the Dustin lamp. “I think the scale and impact of this lamp is beautiful. The hand painted check on the ceramic base has a craft like feel to it - I purposefully wanted the check to feel a little bit wonky and hand painted,” explains Weiland.

Using the original artwork for the Wilder rug and cushion, Shrimps also created a set of limited run prints that brings together classic characters in a water colour finish. The print is 50x70cm framed and on a mount.
