Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Hewlett Packard (HP) launched the HP TouchPad WebOS tablet in early July throughout the USA, Canada, the UK, France and Germany for an introductory retail price of $499 for the 16GB version and $599 for the 32GB version.
Following its launch, the HP TouchPad received what pcworld.com called a "cold reception," and it was most likely this reception that caused HP to begin offering the tablet at discounted rates on a series of retail sites. Discounts began at $50 and eventually increased to $120 on August 5 on daily deal site Woot.
These discounts caused US consumers to search online for the tablet. Data from Google Insights shows that over the seven days prior to August 10 "HP TouchPad" was the term, in the category Products, with the largest increase in searches over the past seven days. The data also shows that 100 percent of these searches originated in the USA and the majority were related to the deal.
According to HP's Facebook page these discounts are now no longer available, having ended on Sunday August 7.
The search term with the second largest increase in growth over the past seven days was vacuum cleaner "Dyson DC24," which is currently being offered at discounted rates by Amazon.co.uk, Argos and Dixons - those deals were highlighted by consumer magazine Which?.
The search terms with the most significant growth worldwide in the last seven days, in the category Products as measured by Google Insights, recorded on August 10 were:
1. hp touchpad (+250%)
2. dyson dc24 (+200%)
3. the help (+200%) movie due for release August 10
4. probiotics (+80%)
5. g shock watches (+40%)
