The 12.9-in tablet, due for release in 2015, is expected to be unveiled on 16 October in a press conference that will also reveal a new line of iMacs, according to Re/Code.
A source in Apple’s supply chain told Digitimes that it is developing two tablet prototypes – one a regular tablet, while another will be integrated with both operating systems.
That means that it could be releasing a so-called iPad Pro with full desktop capabilities, as well as an iPad Air 2 – an upgrade on its 2013 offering.
The latter thin and lightweight device is expected to have Touch ID, more RAM, and Apple’s iOS 8 software - but could also simply be called iPad 6.
It has also been suggested that a new colour of gold could be available for the next generation of iPad.
Despite claims that an iPad Pro is in the works, Ming-Chi Kuo, an Analyst from KGI Securities, reportedly told investors that it predicts the “only new iPad product in 2H14 will be the upgraded iPad Air”, reports Macworld.
Apple has not confirmed the rumours and has yet to respond to The Independent.
