The picture has more than 26 million likes on the photo-sharing platform since being posted by a mystery person or group on 4 January, overtaking Jenner’s previous record of 18 million likes on Sunday evening.
The account holder declined to reveal their actual identity when questioned by The Independent, signing off an email simply as Eugene the egg.
“I have 0 photos and only 400 followers on my personal [Instagram account] so it’s a surreal feeling,” they said.
“It’s been a wild week. But this isn’t about me it’s about the egg.”
The image of the egg continues to gain likes at a significant rate, despite the record already being broken.
“Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram,” the photo’s caption states.
“Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”
Jenner responded to the new world record with her own Instagram post, titled “Take that little egg.”
The 15 second video clip shows the reality TV star cracking an egg and breaking it onto the ground.
