New pictures might be the world's first glimpse at the upcoming PS5.

The images show the strange design of the new PlayStation's developer kits. They are early versions of the console given to game companies to create games for the unreleased console.

The final version of the PlayStation 5 – which is expected to be released during the holiday season next year – is unlikely to resemble the unusual hardware that has been leaked.

But the pictures nonetheless represent the first time the world has had a change to see the PS5 in any form, and some of the details may remain the same.

The most striking feature of the developer kits is their swooping curved shape. In addition to resembling the roman numeral V in fitting fashion for the PS5, the design is thought to allow the fans to expel more air and keep the hardware cool, as well as allowing them to be stacked on top of each other.

The picture also shows a controller plugged into the console. While it looks strikingly similar to the one sold with current PlayStations, it may also be an updated controller, with a Sony patent filing recently suggesting that the DualShock 5 could keep a largely similar look.

The PS5 devkit is largely in line with what rumours and leaks have suggested it looks like over recent months. Indeed, it looks almost identical to mock-ups that fans created based on those leaks.

Sony has revealed a great deal about the upcoming PS5. Chief among its expected features is a vastly upgraded SSD for storage, which the company has suggested will allow games to load far more quickly than the current generation of consoles.

In October, it said that the new console would arrive in time for "Holiday 2020".
