Apex Legends season 2, titled Battle Charge, rolled out on 2 July for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Players of the strategic battle royale game will have access to new weapons, such as the L-Star light machine gun, which is capable of firing large projectiles and blasting open doors.
The powerful weapon will only be available from air drops and comes with a limited amount of ammo that can't be replaced.
Its plasma bullets mean it also has a tendency to overheat if the trigger is held down for too long.
"The L-Star's unique projectiles are much larger than those fired by other weapons in Apex," Sean Slayback, the principal weapons designer for Apex Legends, wrote in a post introducing the new weapon.
"Players need to lead targets more at range to compensate for the L-Star's slower projectiles, but on the flip side, they don't have to aim quite as precisely to get good effect on target. "
Apex Legends Season 2 also introduces a new character called Wattson, as well as a ranked mode that allows players to earn points from kills and well-placed finishes in the battle royale.
The best players will earn the title of Apex Predator, the game's developers revealed in a blog post.
"We believe that Apex is a dynamic game that takes time and effort to master," the post stated.
"Ranked Leagues should be the place where competitive players (or players who feel competitive now and then) can go to prove their skills and gain recognition for their efforts."
Other updates to Apex Legends for its second season include new skins and emotes, as well as a host of in-game rewards for those who progress through the ranked mode.
