This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

The art of palmistry, otherwise known as "chiromancy" has been practised across the world throughout history.

While many will be familiar with the way in which clairvoyants analyse every line and crevice of a person’s palm in order to somehow foresee their future, few may be aware that their feet can apparently be just as revealing.

“Foot reading”, also known as “solestry”, is a form of divination that can supposedly tell a great deal about an individual’s personality.

Foot readers claim that they’re able to gauge a person’s character simply by taking a look at the size of a person’s big toe or the height of their arch.

Foot reader Ann Scardarella has even gone so far as to state that your feet could divulge the goings-on of your love life.

“If there is an issue in your life that you are struggling with, it will manifest itself in your feet,” she told Cosmopolitan.

The scientific evidence to back foot reading as an authentic practise is unsurprisingly lacking.

However, that hasn't stopped people such as Jane Sheehan from running workshops on the subject in Scotland for more than £100 a day.

If your curiosity has surpassed your better judgement and you’d like to find out more, here’s how your feet could be divulging the inner workings of your mind:

If you have large big toes

According to Pedireviews, having a big toe that’s far larger than the rest of your toes could be sign of creativity.

On top of that, it could also indicate that you’re a sharp thinker, while having smaller toes is seemingly a sign of being a good multi-tasker. Who knew!

If you have longer second toes

When looking for a dynamic leader to take charge, looking to individuals with longer second toes is apparently the right course of action.

However, it could also correlate to a greater tendency to being impulsive, a trait which may not be the most ideal for anyone in a powerful position of leadership.

If you’re able to wiggle your little toe

Not only could the ability to wiggle your little toe by itself put you in great stead to taking part in next year’s Britain’s Got Talent, but it could also demonstrate a proclivity for adventure.

However, those who can’t are more likely to be loyal and committed life partners, so everyone’s a winner.

If you have high or low arches

While a low arch could lead to the development of various foot or ankle issues, it’s also supposedly a sign of sociability.

On the other hand, people with high arches prefer to live independently and go it alone.

If you have toes with long necks

Those who have toes with unusually long “necks”, as they’re purportedly referred to, are known as having more expressive personalities.

So, if you meet someone who’s especially extroverted or frequently expresses their feelings with unquestionable enthusiasm, then chances are you’ll be able to visualise their feet in your mind’s eye. As much as you don’t want to.
