Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. While the nation remains at home during lockdown, plenty of us have turned our hand to baking, whether you're attempting to make banana bread or sourdough.
Answering all of our prayers, Warburtons has unveiled its secret crumpet recipe for us all to enjoy from home.
The baking company, which makes more than 700 million crumpets a year, has revealed the famous recipe for one of Britain’s most-loved breakfast foods, one it has been following for over 30 years.
The announcement follows other food companies sharing recipes for cult-favourite dishes during lockdown, including Wagamama’s iconic katsu curry.
Several Instagram users expressed their excitement over the news that you can now create Warburtons’s crumpets from home with just a few ingredients.
“YES, as a crumpet connoisseur I need to make these ASAP!!!” one user commented, while another said: “This is a game changer! Thanks Warburtons.”
Here is how to make Warburtons’s much-loved crumpets:
Ingredients (for six crumpets):
- 150g of plain white flour
- 200ml of water
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- ½ teaspoon of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of dried yeast
Method
- Add flour, water and salt to a mixing bowl
- Mix vigorously with a whisk (for at least five minutes) to create your crumpet batter
- Mix a few millilitres of water into to your dried yeast
- Add sugar, baking powder and yeast mixture to bowl and mix for another 30 seconds until you have a clear batter
- Cover mixing bowl and put into a warm place for 15 minutes (top tip – make sure your mixing bowl is bigger than you need as it will expand)
- Place a greased metal biscuit cutter (any shape cutter you have to hand will also do the trick) into the middle of a non-stick frying pan
- Pre-heat your frying pan on a hob on a medium-high heat setting
- Before you start, give your batter a stir to remove any large air bubbles
- Use a ladle to drop approximately 60g of batter into the cutter inside the pan
- Wait for approximately four minutes, then carefully lift the ring off the crumpet
- Remove baked crumpet from pan (if the top looks a bit gooey flip over in the pan for a few seconds)
- Leave to cool
