Something for the Weekend:

2002 Pinot Grigio;

2000 H Rouge;

2002 Casillero del Diablo Sauvignon Blanc
Saturday : 2002 Pinot Grigio, La Prendina Estate. £5.99, Marks & Spencer
So much pinot grigio is overrated. This though is pinot grigio with attitude, a dry white from near Lake Garda, which combines a brisk, refreshing texture with delicately nutty and honeyed undertones. To be drunk on its own or with oily or white fish.
Sunday: 2000 H Rouge, l'Hospitalet, Vin de Pays d'Oc. £5.09, Tesco
This modern, southern French blend of cabernet, merlot and syrah does a pretty good job of out-Bordeauxing Bordeaux with its spicy, chocolatey fruitiness. At the Tesco Wine Festival, 20 per cent off all French wines for the next 10 days brings it down from £6.99, so it's a good chance to snap up a bottle or three to go with roast lamb or a mature, hard British cheese.
Any day: 2002 Casillero del Diablo Sauvignon Blanc. £3.99 (buy 2), Majestic
From Concha y Toro's Devil's Cellar brand, this crisply refreshing new vintage Chilean dry white is aromatic and opulently juicy with tropical edge to the sauvignon's trademark gooseberryish qualities. Majestic's new promotion – a 15 per cent saving when you buy any two Chilean wines – makes this the affordable in hot pursuit of the irresistible.
