So successful is the Fish! formula of fresh fish, simple cooking, smart design and family-friendly atmosphere, that there are now 18 of them throughout Britain. First choose your fish (swordfish, cod, skate etc), then your cooking technique (steam, grill etc), then your sauce (hollandaise, herb butter etc). That's two too many decisions to make, but at least you know you'll be having fish.

The classic 1994 Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" episode triggered off a tidal wave of soup kitchens across the Western world. Soupworks started in 1998 and now runs three outlets in London where you can eat in or take out. There are salads, noodles and sushi, but don't be silly – have the minestrone or leek and potato soup.
