If you're too contrived about food on Valentine's Day it makes you feel like you're at the beginning of a relationship. This is food for a couple who want to stay together: it's more romantic. But of course I'd have sex first, so you don't have to worry about expanding tummies. If you think it will be bonding, you can cook it together, or, if that could create tension, your partner can sit and watch. It can be incredibly soothing, watching someone cook for you. But don't get too fancy. I used to go out with a chef who would cook amazing things when all I wanted was sausage and mash.

1 small rack of lamb, about 1kg
4 cloves of garlic, peeled
As many potatoes as you fancy
Sunflower oil
Juice of one lemon
A little rosemary
Salt and pepper

Prepare the potatoes. You should buy brown-skinned ones, with plenty of dirt on them, as they always taste better. Give them a quick scrub and peel them, then cut into halves or quarters. Boil them until just soft, then drain them, fluff the outsides up a bit with a fork, and leave them to go slightly floury. Pour half an inch of oil into the bottom of a roasting dish and put it in the oven while it heats to 180C/gas mark 4. When the oil's piping hot, put the potatoes in for an hour or so.

Trim the excess fat from the lamb, but leave some on. Make an incision between the ribs, so it's easier to rip them off and eat with your fingers later on. Chop the garlic and stuff a little into each incision, along with some rosemary. Pour some oil over it all, squeeze over some lemon juice and season. Put in the oven for 40 minutes at 170C/gas mark 3.
