Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

This Stilton, walnut and pear salad is one of my favourite recipes - I always make it in the summer as it's the perfect quick-and-easy recipe to eat outside with friends. I was delighted to pass it on to the National Osteoporosis Society's campaign as it's a cause I'm really committed to supporting. One in three women and one in 12 men over the age of 50 will develop osteoporosis. The Society is raising awareness of the condition and the way foods high in calcium, such as Stilton, can help fight it. Including blue cheeses like Stilton in salad is one of the easiest - and most delicious - ways to introduce more calcium into your diet

225g watercress
225g lean rindless bacon, chopped
1 pear, peeled, cored and chopped
50g walnut halves or pecans
2 tbsp walnut oil
1 tbsp lemon juice
Freshly ground black pepper
100g Stilton, crumbled

Place the watercress in a large serving bowl. Grill the bacon rashers until crispy and leave on kitchen paper to drain. Place the pear in a saucepan with walnuts or pecans, walnut oil, lemon juice and pepper, and cook gently for 3-4 minutes then remove from the heat. Spoon mixture onto the watercress, add the bacon and Stilton, and serve immediately.
