Cocktails have proven to be a high point of the Covid-19 pandemic, with searches for cocktails you can make at home a frequent question typed into Google over the past year.

As for the types of drinks people have been enjoying in quarantine, travel rewards company Upgraded Points recently released a map of the most popular cocktails in every state over the past year, and it’s clear that champagne has been a winner.

Of the 50 states, and Washington DC, eight of the states made champagne cocktails such as mimosas or bellinis, with the brunch drink made with orange juice and champagne found to be the most popular in Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Most Americans also enjoyed drinks that could easily be made at home, or with what you’d typically find in the pantry, with New Yorkers favouring the vodka fizz, a simple drink that requires just vodka, club soda, simple syrup and lime, while the gin iteration proved to be most popular in South Carolina.

Other easily made cocktails included the fuzzy navel, made with peach schnapps and orange juice, which the travel company, analysing search data from Google Trends from March 2020 to March 2021, found to be a hit in Iowa.

In the nation’s capital, the bay breeze came out on top as residents mixed cranberry juice, pineapple juice and vodka.

However, other states became more creative during lockdown, with states such as New Jersey, Florida and New Mexico going as far as to break out the blender to create pina coladas, while those living in Alaska preferred White Russians, a drink made by mixing heavy cream, vodka and kahlua.

There were also the cocktail classics you would expect on the map, with some states relying on old fashioneds to keep them entertained while people living in Arizona kept things simple with Jack and coke.

Vacation-inspired cocktails made up a significant portion of the states, with the map also showing tequila sunrises, daiquiris, wine coolers, sex on the beach and mai tais as some of the favoured drinks during quarantine.

Interestingly, when Upgraded Points broke down the searches by season, margaritas were found to be consistently popular during the summer and winter months, with the cocktail coming in second in both categories.

After mimosas and margaritas, the winter months saw the Moscow mule gain the most popularity, whereas Americans favoured painkillers, margaritas and appletinis during the summer.

As for the number of people partaking in aperitifs, the company found, unsurprisingly, that search interest for “cocktail recipes” in March of 2020 was almost double what it was in March of 2019.
