McDonald’s has announced it will begin reopening some sites for delivery only next week.

The fast-food giant says it will operate the service from 15 restaurants starting 13 May, with the locations of these restaurants being announced next week.

The chain was forced to shut on 24 March after Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown.

Paul Pomroy, McDonald’s chief executive officer for the UK and Ireland, said: “When we return it will be different as we all adjust to this new normal.

“I want to apologise in advance if our first wave of reopened restaurants does not serve your area.

“Rest assured, we are working hard to reopen more restaurants, but I am adamant this must be at the right pace with the wellbeing of our employees, suppliers and customers front of mind.

“Slowly, but safely, we will return to towns and cities across the UK and Ireland, and thank you for your continued support as we work through this crisis.”

It comes just three days after Pomroy said McDonald’s was carrying out “operational tests” to prepare for going back into business.

“Restarting our business is not an easy task even when reopening in a limited capacity,” he said in a previous statement.

“We have set ourselves some key criteria for reopening, all of which takes time – first and foremost ensuring the wellbeing of our people and creating the right environment for them to return to work.”

McDonald’s is among a number of chains reopening sites across the UK after a six-week shutdown.

KFC, Burger King and Nando’s have all begun offering delivery services from some of their sites.
