Mayochup, created by Heinz, was first revealed in April, when the condiment giant released the hybrid in the Middle East.
After a successful launch, the company asked the US through an online poll whether they’d also be interested in stocking shelves with mayochup - and the results found more than a half a million people in favour of the sauce.
While the initial announcement of the “new” condiment did cause some backlash from people who’ve been combining the two ingredients long before Heinz started, the release is now official.
On Twitter, Heinz shared the news, writing: “#Mayochup is here,” before revealing the “saucy cities” that tweet the name of the new condiment the most will be among the first to try the pastel-hued sauce - with a side of fries.
Although the combination has been used before under various names, the company said the decision to launch mayochup was a “no-brainer.”
“After seeing the unprecedented passion surrounding this product, including the nearly one million votes on social media and 500,000 votes in favour of bringing it stateside, launching mayochup in the US was a no-brainer,” said Heinz director of marketing Nicole Kulwicki in a press release.
Despite the people who’d voted in favour of mayochup’s US debut, the news of the soon-to-be-released dipping sauce has been met with mixed reactions from people on social media.
“Not really sure about the point of mayochup,” one person tweeted. “First of all, it’s just thousand island dressing, aka fancy sauce. Second, it combines two condiments most people probably already have in their fridge. Now we have a pre-mixed version? Are people really that lazy?”
Another said: “My city already has mayochup and we call it fry sauce. Pretty sure its existence is older than I am.”
However, others were excited for the new condiment.
“Hey, bring it to Chicago. I can’t wait for mayochup,” one person tweeted.
Fans can continue to vote for their city by tweeting the name and the hashtag #mayochup.
