Rumours have been rife over the past few months concerning the release of a new Maltesers product.

For those who speculated that the confectionary brand would be launching a new two-dimensional version of the sweet treat, their assumptions have now officially been confirmed.

Maltesers Buttons have been created as a smaller alternative to the signature snack, boasting a greater ratio of chocolate to malt.

To put that into context, the original Maltesers that many of us know and love contain 75 per cent milk chocolate and 7.5 per cent malt extract.

With that in mind, you can expect this new addition to the brand to be especially chocolatey.

The Independent was given the opportunity to try the new snack at the launch, and can confirm that fans of the original Maltesers will definitely be satisfied with the result.

However, the Maltesers Buttons wasn’t the only new product to be announced.

Mars Wrigley Confectionery UK has also unveiled Maltesers Truffles, the confectionary brand’s first entry into the world of premium chocolate.

When you try the truffles, you’ll be able to taste the familiar crunch of Maltesers in addition to a creamy texture synonymous with truffles.

In March, the news that Maltesers would be transformed to become flat as opposed to spherical hit the headlines, with many on social media expressing their outrage over the supposed change.

“The day is getting worse! Maltesers are changing the shape from round balls to buttons! World is finished,” one disappointed individual wrote on Twitter.

Another tweeted: “The Earth isn’t flat… neither are Maltesers.”

The leak of information supposedly came about when actors auditioning for parts in the advert for the product revealed that they’d been informed that the chocolate would be flat.

However, at the time a spokesman told The Mirror: “We are not planning to change the shape of the much-loved original Maltesers, however we are continually looking at ways to extend the brand, creating new ways for our customers to enjoy Maltesers.”

In addition to Maltesers Buttons, Maltesers Truffles will also be launched mid-July

While customers will still be able to purchase their much-beloved original Maltesers, from mid-July they’ll also be able to try the Maltesers Buttons and Truffles.

Rebecca Shepheard-Walwyn, Maltesers brand director, stated: “We are extremely excited to be launching these new brand extensions to express different elements of Maltesers, one of the UK’s biggest heritage brands.

“Maltesers Buttons will introduce the brand to younger consumers while Maltesers Truffles will grow the category through being perfect for those special gifting occasions.”

Maltesers Buttons will be available in a 32g bag for 66p, a 68g “treat bag” for £1.19, a 93g “pouch” for £2.09 and a 159g “more to share” bag for £3.29.

Maltesers Truffles will be available in a 54g “token gift box” for £1.99, a 200g “medium gift box” for £4.99 and a 336g “large gift box” for £.749.

The large gift box for the truffles will be sold exclusively at Tesco this year.
