Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Jelly doesn't get more feel-good and quintessentially Caribbean than Walkerswood's Jamaican guava. Bob Marley sang, "come rub it p'on me belly wid you guava jelly". The fragrant tropical fruit is full of vitamin C, and Walkerswood is a rural, employee-owned Jamaican company making sauces and seasonings. The jelly itself is very sweet; spread it on toast, stir into sauces or use as a glaze. £1.79 for a 340g jar from supermarkets.
Phone for the fish knife
John Betjeman took a snobbishly dim view of fish knives, but the sleek Kype smoked salmon server didn't exist in his day. This elegant fish-shaped stainless-steel knife makes light work of carving slices of smoked salmon, and is cleverly designed to help slide the slices on to a plate, too. A fish knife there's no shame in phoning for, or order from www.lakelandlimited.com (01539 488100) for £18.95 plus £3.95 postage on orders under £45, or www.lochfyne.com (01499 600264) for £15 plus £5 delivery.
Choc tactics
Montezuma's first London chocolate shop (the others are in Brighton, Chichester and Windsor) joins St John Bread & Wine, Jeanette Winterson's corner shop and A. Gold, the British food specialist, as the most recent addition to the increasingly delectable spread in Spitalfields. Among the inventive chocolates hand-made in Sussex are 30 different bars made from cocoa from the Dominican Republic, or the intriguingly spicy Emperor bars, flavoured with nutmeg, chilli, sweet paprika or three peppers. 51 Brushfield Street, London
E1 (020-7539 9208). Or, if you can't get to the shop, buy from 0845 450 6306/www.montezumas.co.uk
Pan tastic
The mercurial Marco Pierre White has followed other celebrity chefs and gone down the pan route. MPW says of his White Heat Collection, made by BEKA, "a pan must be an extension of yourself". Which gives him plenty of extensions: the five collections of pans, three made with copper, include hard, anodised copper-based (pictured here, from £32 to £88), stainless steel with copper base (£20 to £90) and top-of-the range copper (£48-£250).
