How to tell if your Creme Egg is white chocolate before you buy
It's surprisingly simple
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The announcement that Cadbury has launched white chocolate Creme Eggs sent sweet-toothed chocolate lovers into a frenzy last week.
And if the prospect of the eggs themselves wasn’t exciting enough, if you find one of the 371 which have been distributed in stores across the UK, you’ll win a guaranteed cash prize, ranging from £100 to an impressive £2,000.
But considering there are so few of the white Creme Eggs, you might be thinking you’ll have to chomp your way through a lot of them if you want to have any chance of finding a white one.
However, that isn’t the case.
There’s one very simple way to find out whether a Creme Egg is white chocolate or standard milk: all you have to do is read the ingredients on the foil.
A spokesperson for Cadbury told The Independent: “All white Cadbury Creme Eggs, whilst wrapped in the same iconic packaging as the classic creme egg, will contain nutritional information that is specific to the white chocolate variant.
“It is a legal requirement for all food manufacturers to display all ingredients on the packaging.”
This means white egg hunters will be able to find out whether they’ve got a winning egg before unwrapping it.
The new Creme Eggs are in shops including Co-op, Sainsbury’s Local, Tesco Express and local newsagents from now until April 1.
Any white egg will win you at least £100, 34 eggs are worth £1,000 and one egg could win you an impressive £2,000.
The top prize egg will be in a branch of Co-op somewhere in the UK.
If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one of the rare eggs, you’ll need to hold on to the wrapper to claim your prize - there’ll be a phone number on a voucher under the foil that you can ring to find out how much your egg is worth.
You’ll have to give a unique code from the wrapper too, so be careful when opening your egg.
The Independent managed to get hold of a couple of the white chocolate eggs but we were actually slightly disappointed by the taste - the white eggs are incredibly sweet and we decided we prefer the original ones.
So if you don’t manage to find a white chocolate Creme Egg - even when knowing to check the packaging - don’t worry. You may have a more delicious treat with the regular milk chocolate eggs.
