With its history rooted in ancient Greece, the humble pie has come a long way since the fifth century BC... With varieties ranging from ice cream to seitan, and one of the best smoked-sausage pies in the business, we round up the pastry prowess ahead of British Pie Week, which begins today.

Likely one of the most authentic names on this list, the Old Bank of England don’t just boast interiors that hark back to the golden age of pubs – its award-winning chefs have a London pie menu to die for. With tempting offers like Hampshire game pie with Mrs Owton’s smoked bacon and juniper gravy and chicken madras pie with sultanas, it keeps the spirit of British pies alive while still retaining a unique edge.

The Windmill, London

As a three-time winner of the British Pie Awards, London is expecting big things from Mayfair’s The Windmill. The handmade pies are paired with specific beers, boasting everything from a vegetarian filo pie with Fourpure American Pale to a market fish pie with Sambrooks Pumphouse and shepherd’s pie with Truman’s Roller IPA.

Not only is this one of the only brew pubs in Cambridge, they’re churning out pies like nobody’s business. Choose from an unpretentious steak and ale offering, a fishy little number with smoked haddock and salmon, a vegetarian option stuffed with squash, spinach and ricotta and more. You can knock back one of these pies with a drink for just £10.

Pieminister Cardiff

Keeping things both delicious and discounted this British Pie Week, Pieminister’s Cardiff branch is offering its Social Club members an unmissable deal of two award-winning pies with oh-so buttery mash for just a fiver. We repeat, a fiver. Also happen to find your way to Brixton Market? You could get your hands on the brand’s “Pork Pie-Scream”, a crazed (or possibly genius) blend of pork pie and ice cream.

A five star hotel with a Kensington postcode, you should expect slinky things from the British Pie Week menu at The Milestone Hotel. Three-course makes up the bones of this specially created selection of dishes, including everything from wild mushroom pies to a downright delicious spiced apple pie, all available in Cheneston’s Restaurant, the Stables Bar and The Conservatory.

With the restaurant’s Mayfair Game Pie nabbing the best dish gong at the Tatler Awards 2016, the team at Corrigan’s knew their sophisticated form of dining would need another sophisticated pie to match. Bringing you just that, this year’s pheasant and smoked sausage pie sees Corrigan’s upping its pie game yet again.

Young Vegans, London

No Pie Week editorial would be complete without a mention of the most notorious vegan pies in London. The Young Vegans have their very own spot in the bustling Camden Lock, churning out pies with meat-free fillings such as seitan and ale, curry with chana chickpeas, and fan favourite: peanut butter and chocolate mud pies.
