Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

For more than 30 years Purina has partnered with Cats Protection, the two teaming up to promote their shared belief that no cat is unadoptable. But when potential owners come to Cats Protection in the hope of finding a new furry friend, there can be a few issues to overcome.

Sometimes the cats themselves have specific behavioural or health needs that mean they take longer to find a home. Or sometimes the prospective owners have their own reasons for finding it hard to be paired with the right cat.

But Cats Protection can always find a match, and that’s how Samantha, above, and her son Henry managed to overcome an apparently insurmountable stumbling block when they adopted Belle.

“I’m allergic to cats,” Samantha explains, “so I’m not exactly what you’d describe as a typical cat person. I’ve always wanted my son Henry to feel the happiness that cats can bring but I couldn’t have a cat living in the house.”

Where there’s a will there’s a way, though, and where others might have seen a problem, Cats Protection saw an opportunity. “When I chatted to them about adoption,” says Samantha, “rather than look at me as if I was bonkers, they saw me as the possible answer to one of their cat’s very unique needs. That cat was Belle.

“She had always loved being outdoors as she was a little anxious around people. After nine months in care, Belle’s need and love of the outdoors made her the perfect cat for me and Henry.”

And so Belle finally found a loving home, and plenty of space in which to roam. “It just feels so good to be able to give her a home,” says Samantha. “She now has her own warm, dry outbuilding and lots of land to explore. We take it in turns to feed her and she can be affectionate but she’s also a real character.”

Belle is now enjoying her new-found freedom and her confidence has greatly improved, as Samantha confirms: “She is also allowed to venture into the house, which she may do from time to time – if her busy prowling schedule allows it.”

Purina and Cats Protection believe no cat is unadoptable. They are working together to help find every cat their perfect match. If you’re ready to give a cat a loving home go to cats.org.uk/adopt-a-cat
