FinalStraw: The world's first collapsible, reusable straw

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The world’s first collapsible, reusable straw is finally here.

Following in the footsteps of single-use carrier bags and disposable coffee cups the government is waging a war on plastic straws.

And, with Brits thought to use 8.5 billion of them a year and Americans getting through 500 million per day, is it any wonder?

But, what’s the big deal? The problem with plastic straws is that they take around 200 years to break down and, because the material cannot biodegrade, they remain in the environment for thousands of years clogging landfills, polluting oceans and causing harm to marine life.

For anyone wanting to rid their lives, and the planet, of single-use plastic, reusable straws do already exist on the market – some made from bamboo or titanium, others from glass – but they’re hardly convenient to carry when you’re out and about.

The possible solution? FinalStraw – the world’s first collapsible, reusable straw that folds down into a case small enough to fit on your keychain.

Created by Emma Cohen and Miles Pepper from Canada, the straw is made from stainless steel and designed to last a lifetime, while the container is made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic.

It can be used for both hot and cold drinks, is dishwasher safe and BPA free.

And, if you’re wondering how you keep it clean on-the-go, FinalStraw also comes with a handy cleaning squeegee that fits in the case.

According to its creators just one final straw can save 584 straws from entering our landfills and oceans every year.

Within 24 hours of launching its Kickstarter page the project has already exceeded expectations by surpassing its goal of £8,971 with pledges totalling an impressive £468,544.

As such, FinalStraw is launching this year with delivery expected in November 2018.

Each one costs $20 (£14.35) and ships from Los Angeles but UK fans can also get their hands on one with shipping coming in at an extra $10 (£7.17)
