Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

‘Tis the season to get your glam on, but for many the forthcoming rush of Christmas parties – from casual drinks with colleagues to the annual work do – can prove quite the headache.

After all, knowing how to showcase your personal style while simultaneously embracing the festive spirit and maintaining a sense of professionalism is a tricky line to tread.

That being said, party dressing needn’t be so bewildering. The best thing to consider here is opting for something that, while elevating your look, isn’t going to completely transform it.

A little black dress is a fail-safe option that, although simple, can be easily livened up with edgy asymmetric cuts, semi-sheer fabrics and, of course, some seriously stand-out accessories.

In this case, investing in a pair of statement earrings guarantees to give even the most boring of ensembles a dose of glamour and, if you’re feeling really brave, colour.

Alternatively, start your party look from the feet up with a pair of embellished skyscraper heels that will tap into your temptation for seasonal sequins. Or, find a sparkly skirt and pair it with a simple, lightweight black knit.

If you want to join in the spirit of things a tad more literally though, we suggest indulging in the must-have-material of the moment – velvet. A luxurious, wintry fabric, it can be found in everything from sleek wrap dresses, to our favourite: the cool-girl trouser suit.

A great way to get noticed in a sea of cocktail dresses, a two-piece is not only seriously stylish but is also an investment that will last you well beyond the festive season.
