Perhaps not the most historically traditional route into the world of patterns and swatches, Beckham’s foray into fashion was a natural fit for a Spice Girl whose little black dresses and sharp bob haircut made her hands-down the most chic member of the group.
Since launching in 2008, Victoria Beckham is now sold in more than 50 countries worldwide and has stores in London and Hong Kong.
A brand that many dissenters doubted would amount to much, is today one of the most covetable tickets at New York Fashion Week, and boasts accolades including the reputable Best Designer at the British Fashion Awards and employs around 180 people.
To ring in her first decade, the designer has starred in a video with British Vogue in which she is every bit as funny and self-deprecating as much of the world has often suggested she is not.
Shot to accompany her October cover of the magazine, on which Beckham stars alongside her four children and dog, the film opens like a traditional 'behind the scenes' cover shoot video, with Beckham walking onto set wearing a black mini dress and high heels as a photographer snaps her in different poses, before raising her arm to the camera and striking her iconic Spice Girls peace sign pose.
British Vogue editors including editor-in-chief Edward Enniful narrate the film, describing Beckham’s style as ‘chic,’ ‘refined,’ and ‘pared’ down.’
Meanwhile, Beckham can be seen motioning to a reversing van inside of which she has packed numerous opulent props and costumes for the shoot, including the ivory Vera Wang wedding dress she wore to marry David Beckham in 1999.
Introducing herself, the former Spice Girl explains that, “Today we’re here at Vogue and we are shooting a cover story celebrating the rich and stylist history of one of the most enduring style icons of all time. Me, Victoria Beckham.”
Written and directed by Isaac Lock, the five-minute short sees the baffled Vogue editor look on whilst Beckham dresses in increasingly outrageous Spice Girls ensembles.
‘Edward, you know I’m a minimalist, right?’ she says to Enniful.
Meanwhile, celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury describes how she’s giving the designer ‘a little sunkissed’ effect, before painting Beckham’s face almost entirely gold.
Describing her inspiration for the shoot, Beckham says she wants it to include four women, one sporty, one in full-on leopard print, one in a pink girly outfit and a ‘sexy’ one with red hair.
‘Spice up your life, Edward,’ she says.
The hilarious video then ends just as Beckham walks onto set for her final look.
Fans of the designer have been enjoying it on social media, with the video reaching more than five thousand views after just hours of posting.
Tweeting at Vogue, Alan Palmer said: "Pure Gold. Never let anyone tell you the VB isn't funny or completely embracing of Spice Girls past." (Sic)
Another user, Christopher Golds wrote: "HYSTERICAL!! Love her." (Sic)
Having been recently criticised for being stuffy and out of touch with the internet age of fashion, Vogue’s video pokes fun at fashion industry clichés, and sees Beckham prove that she doesn’t take herself quite as seriously as people might like to think.
