From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Valentine’s day is just around the corner, and whether you’re looking for the perfect present or want to treat yourself, a seductive fragrance is the perfect way to embrace the ultimate celebration of love and libido.

A word of warning here though: while fragrance is one of the most popular items to gift at this time year it should be approached with caution.

You see, just like a pair of undies, a scent is one of the most personal gifts a person can receive, and, as such, needs to fit its wearer seamlessly. Going on your first date? Then forget it. But if you know your better half well, take note of the types of bouquet they prefer.

So, what should you go for?

A fragrance that’s often considered antiquated, rose has undergone a transformation of late to become one of the most alluring options for those who prefer floral tinctures.

Take Gucci’s Guilty Absolute Pour Femme for instance. A new scent, it’s made using an intense concoction of Bulgarian rose, patchouli oil and a mysterious touch of blackberry that’s perfect for a contemporary woman.

Similarly, Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose & Oud offers a rich, decadent take on Damask rose.

For a more traditional take on floral, Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is a bright and radiant option for those who like something a little lighter, while Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb Nectar imparts a fresh finish.

If feminine, powdery scents are more her thing though, we suggest picking up Jean Paul Gaultier’s Scandal or Glossier’s You. While they are both soft and girlish at first whiff, each wears down to reveal a hint of musk.

The former comes in a super-chic bottle that makes for a great addition to any dressing table while the latter now comes in solid form that’s perfect for girls on the go.

For fans of more alternative scents, only deep, seductive fragrances will do. An oldie but a goodie, Versace’s Crystal Noir ticks all the boxes here with a rich, addictive smell that’s guaranteed to satisfy.

Alternatively, Tom Ford’s Private Blend Vanille Fatale is seriously luxurious. With notes of spicy saffron, tobacco, coffee and frangipani, it’s a smoky scent that’s all about fierce sensuality.
