Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Every woman has dreamed of being a Victoria's Secret model and wearing those iconic enormous Angel Wings.
Now New Yorkers will be able to snap a photo of themselves with the famous accessories in a marketing campaign recently announced by the lingerie brand.
Nine vintage Angel Wings (previously worn by models Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima and Miranda Kerr) will be on display in Plexiglas cubes from November 19-30 on Broadway Avenue between Houston and Prince streets in New York - just a stone's throw from the company's SoHo location. The see-through boxes will have a step in front where people can stand on in order to simulate wearing the wings and have their photos taken.
Participants can send their photos via a multimedia text message to Angel (26435) and their images will then be uploaded to the Victoria's Secret Facebook fan page under a photo album called "Wings! NYC." They can subsequently tag themselves in the photos and share them with their friends via the social networking site.
The American retailer of women's lingerie, loungewear and beauty products currently boasts 9.2 million fans on Facebook, so its new online campaign is likely to be a hit. According to San Francisco-based online-marketing firm Stylophane, which tracks and ranks a brand's Facebook fan base, Victoria's Secret has been the most popular retailer on Facebook since March 2010. It tops both Zara (6.6 million fans) and H&M (4.6 million fans).
The extravagant Angels Wings are a staple in every annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. To date, there have been a total of 92 different sets of wings made. They are veritable works of art, such as one pair made from 10,000 peacock feathers as modeled by Karolina Kurkova. The public art display in New York precedes this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which will be broadcast live on November 30 on the CBS television network in the US.
Victoria's Secret organized a similar public display of its Angel Wings in Chicago last October, encasing the theatrical props in glass boxes like museum vitrines. Other fashion brands to have held temporary, public art exhibits include French couture house Chanel. Its mobile art pavilion, conceived by the company's designer Karl Lagerfeld with famed architect Zaha Hadid, displayed contemporary artworks inspired by Chanel's 2.55 quilted, chain-strap handbag and toured fashion capitals Hong Kong, Toyko, and New York in 2008.
