The re-emergence of slouch boots is further evidence the 1980s is not the decade fashion forgot

The 1980s may be one of the most divisive eras when it comes to style, but the decade has influenced a number of trends of late, from puffy shoulders to high waist jeans and power suits.

In fact, almost all of the most popular styles today are courtesy of the decade, including the polarising trend for slouch boots.

A look that resurfaced last year – after a brief comeback in the early 2000s – thanks to Anthony Vaccarello’s Swarovski crystal boots for Saint Laurent which cost £6,855 – the part-shoe, part-leg warmer is officially back and better than ever.

While boot trends are hardly front page news when it comes to autumn/winter, until now the spotlight had been on more mainstream styles such as sock, Chelsea and white boots.

Now though, the style set are looking for footwear with an old-school sensibility; something the slouch boot has plenty of.

The trend featured prominently on the runway, coming in every height, colour, fabric and print you can imagine. At Isabel Marant they had a Western feel and were worn thigh high, while Elie Saab opted for plum-coloured pointed-toe styles.

Similarly, Emilio Pucci offered up red versions in quilted satin, and Givenchy went all-white, with slouchy ankle boots that were finished with a silver zipper.

So why should you trade in your structured boots for a pair with extra slouch?

This style might feel like it’s stepped straight out of the 1980s, but it promises to be the perfect partner to everything from printed midi dresses to pleated skirts and slim-fitting jeans.

While you’re welcome to take inspiration from the runway, the most wearable versions are those that come with mid-height heels and in understated leather or suede in neutral tones.
