From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. For some, the thought of letting your mum loose in your wardrobe and choosing your outfits for a week is unthinkable.
But that’s exactly what Kristabel Plummer, a fashion and lifestyle blogger living in London, did when she found she was lacking style inspiration.
In a week long experiment Ms Plummer’s mother was given creative control in all her daughter’s fashion choices despite their differing attitudes to dress sense – Plummer has a more “experimental way of getting dressed”, while her mother favours a more “classic” approach.
The results, Ms Plummer told Buzzfeed, were surprisingly good.
Ms Plummer’s mother helped her daughter pick outfits for a host of occasions including birthday drinks, a conference and for working at home.
The choices included a flowing floral print skirt for a Hawaiian-themed party, 70s style flairs, a button-down black dress pulled from the bottom of her wardrobe and a sleek, white playsuit to wear to work.
Despite her anxieties about letting her mother overhaul her style, Ms Plummer said that the experiment made her realise that “it’s not necessarily a bad thing when a parent approves of your outfit”.
“It’s always a good thing to get a fresh perspective of energy once in a while,” Ms Plummer told Buzzfeed, saying that the experiment made her “admire” the way her mum “makes every day into an occasion” with the clothes she wears.
“I will definitely continue to follow her motto of having fun with what you wear and not caring what anyone else thinks,” she added.
