Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Burtons pounds 14.99 Very soft and heavy, this corduroy shirt almost doubles as a jacket. Good value and will age well as it gets washed and worn. Only the slightly under-sized collar lets it down. Available from Burtons Stores nationwide.
Armani Jeans pounds 95 Mixed fibres make this shirt warm and tough, but a bit itchy. Best worn over a T-shirt. Good shot grey colour, neat seam finishes and quality metal buttons give it a high price. We wonder if it is worth it. Available from Emporio Armani, 57-59 Long Acre, WC2.
Burtons pounds 14.99 Collarless shirts are now a classic item for weekend wear. This one in a muted airforce blue is made from a lightweight herringbone fabric. It would look a lot better with different buttons.
Otherwise a good buy at the price. Available from Burtons stores nationwide.
Next pounds 27.99 The absolute classic weekend wear is the 'jeans' shirt.
This one from Next is in tough but soft, traditional blue denim. Triple top stitching is the only design detail so it is not 'overstyled'. In fact, it won't go out of style. Will fade and age well with repeated washing and wearing. Available from Next Directory on 0345 100 500.
Paul Smith pounds 60 Ink navy cotton drill updates the denim shirt with a touch of Chinese workwear for a shirt that could also lead a more formal life. As with all good weekend shirts wash and wear will change the look of this shirt. It costs a lot but you will get your wear out of it. Available from Paul Smith Jeans 9-11 Langley Court, WC2.
Jigsaw Menswear pounds 55 This shirt is in a khaki melange fabric with a tough, warm handle, it would be fine with jeans or more tweedy clothes for a country squire look. Wear this one with the collar open, for it is a bit mean, impossible to get a tie under, it needs a cravat at the neck.
Available from Jigsaw Menwear, 9-10 Floral Street, WC2, inquires 081-878 8443.
