As the weather starts to cool, the fragrances begin to warm up, with scents from sweet marshmellow to spicy cinnamon
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. It’s that time of year once again where, just as we retrieve our chunky knits from hibernation, our fragrance wardrobe swiftly follows suit.
With autumn, an outbreak of new scents hit the stores to encapsulate everything we know and love about the new season. From smoky bonfires and damp leaves, to spicy cinnamon and sweet marshmallows, the less heavy perfumes we once prised are about to be replaced with a roster of warming fragrances that suit the blustery weather.
Now, while many of us stay loyal to one scent all year round – 34 per cent in fact – the rest of us prefer to mix it up a little and if you haven’t settled on your new season scent just yet, you’re in luck.
A slew of new launches means that there’s plenty to choose from, from fruity perfumes to woody, intense options, there’s something for every occasion, taste and budget. Here, we take a look at our pick of the best new perfumes for autumn.
Hermes, Twilly, £70, Selfridges
Getting your hands on something from Hermes typically necessitates a robust bank balance and a seriously long waiting list, but now even us mere mortals can enjoy a little bit of luxury without months worth of saving up.
Targeting the millennial market, Hermes’ new scent channels youth with key notes of ginger, tuberose and sandalwood to create a floral oriental whiff that’s fresh, spicy, creamy and warm all in one.
Gucci, Bloom, £46.35, John Lewis
The first scent from creative director Alessandro Michele, Gucci Bloom is a rich, white floral scent that celebrates the individuality of the Gucci woman.
Using a list of unique ingredients, it includes natural sambac jasmine, tuberose, orris root and fresh notes of Rangoon Creeper, a plant that has never been used in perfume-making before and was discovered in South India.
The long-lasting perfume also gets top marks for perhaps the prettiest bottle of the season with a pink lacquered retro-inspired bottle reminiscent of porcelain.
Elizabeth and James, Nirvana Vanilla Bourbon, £69, Harrods
Fans of unusual, inherently masculine fragrances will want to pay attention here. The brand, created by Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, has only been available in US Sephora stores but it’s now officially being brought to the UK at Harrods.
The Nirvana fragrance collection looks set to quickly become a cult favourite but which one should you invest in? Our favourite is Vanilla Bourbon, an intoxicating and ever-so-sexy scent made using vanilla bourbon, oakwood and tuberose. Smoky but with a hint of sweetness, it’s seriously addictive and well worth investing in.
Mugler, Aura, £49, The Perfume Shop
The creator of cult fragrances Angel and Alien, Mugler’s new scent boasts an oriental botanical bouquet. Made using the tiger liana plant it’s fresh and green while a combination of bourbon vanilla absolute and wolfwood give it an intense smokiness.
The bottle is also one you’ll want to show off on your dresser. Inspired by one of the most universal symbols, the heart, it’s faceted and designed in mysterious emerald to reflect life, luck, hope and intuition.
Yves Saint Laurent, Sleek Suede, £195, YSL Beauty
In 2015, Yves Saint Laurent dedicated a special collections of perfumes to its famous pieces of clothing and now, a new line within this concept - Le Vestiaire des Parfums Oriental Collection – features five new perfumes inspired by the designer’s trips, mostly to Morroco.
Our favourite has to be Sleek Suede – a captivating scent, with the warmth of Cocoa bean, Black Oud and the powerful scent of tanned leather. Patchouli and vanilla also imbue it with a long-lasting softness.
Kat Von D, Sinner, £50, Debenhams
Fans of Kat Von D will be glad to hear that she’s brought back her coveted Saint and Sinner fragrance duo but this time they comes with a twist. After months of hard work, the tattoo artists lovingly crafted the filigree detail-work featured on the new cage and box with hand sketches while the design of the bottle was chosen to mirror the shape of the human heart.
If you prefer sweeter, light scents then Saint – a soft, alluring fragrance made with vanilla and creamy musk –should be your go to. However, for a more dark sultry and powerful whiff, Sinner will tick all the boxes. Created using spicy cinnamon, jasmine, vetiver, wood and plum, it’s a seriously rich scent that sweetens as you wear it.
