The first lady of the United States has worn a dress by one of the Duchess of Sussex's favourite fashion designers during her UK state visit.

For the second day of her trip on Tuesday, Melania and US president Donald Trump hosted the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall for dinner at Winfield House, the residence of the US ambassador.

Ms Trump wore a red, wool-crepe and silk chiffon Givenchy gown for the formal occasion, complete with a floor-length cape.

French fashion house Givenchy is a particular favourite of Meghan Markle, whose wedding dress was designed by Clare Waight Keller, the label's artistic director.

One Twitter user pointed out the irony of Melania wearing this particular designer during her UK state visit, given her husband previously calling the duchess "nasty" in a recorded interview.

"Note that this is Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy – who happens to have designed the Duchess of Sussex's (Meghan Markle) wedding dress," one person tweeted.

"This is a smooth choice for Melania, but it comes with a side dish of awkward after Trump's 'nasty' comments."

This isn't the first time Ms Trump has sported a red caped creation by Givenchy.

In February 2017, the first lady of the US wore a knee-length, high-neck red dress with a cape by the French fashion label for her arrival at the Palm Beach International Airport.
