Not even a global pandemic was going to stop the "Plastic Doll" singer from serving up some seriously iconic looks as Mother Monster delivered not one, but nine outfit changes throughout the star-studded event.
The A Star Is Born actor took home a total of five awards and for every acceptance speech, as well as her three-song performance, she wore completely different looks with matching futuristic face masks as she encouraged viewers to practice safety at all times.
“Celebrate yourself, be kind, mask up,” she said during her medley.
From an ensemble inspired by the VMA’s Moon Person trophy to a kaleidoscopic rainbow gown and white feather coat by Valentino, here are Lady Gaga’s most showstopping looks of the night.
Area
Lady Gaga stepped out on the red carpet wearing an outfit inspired by the VMAs' Moon Person statue.
The look consisted of a black dress worn under a silver jacket by Area, a clear helmet by Muscarella, and black platform boots by Pleasers.
On social media, the singer pointed out that she “was wearing face shields before it was a thing.” And, that's true.
At the 2009 VMAs, Lady Gaga accepted her Best New Artist award wearing a red lace Alexander McQueen dress with a matching face mask and crown.
Iris Van Herpen
To accept her first award of the night for Song of the Year, which she won for her duet with Ariana Grande “Rain on Me”, Lady Gaga wore a kaleidoscopic rainbow dress by Iris Van Herpen, which was finished with intricate fringe detailing.
She accessorised the dress with black boots by Pleasers and a hot pink mask that covered her nose, mouth and encircled her eyes, which was designed by Cecilio Castrillo.
Christopher John Rogers
When she approached the stage to accept her second award for Best Collaboration with Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga opted for a metallic green ballgown designed by Christopher John Rogers, who Net-a-Porter declared as a designer to watch in 2020.
She completed the ensemble with a statement necklace and a burgundy mask with horns on either side by Lance Victor Moore.
Valentino
Lady Gaga served up another outfit change as she accepted the award for Artist of the Year. This time round, the singer sported a sequin body suit under an oversized white feather coat designed by Valentino.
Indonesian designer Maison Met, otherwise known as Mety Choa, created the dazzling shiny mask and her platform white boots were by Pleaser shoes.
Candice Cuoco
Lady Gaga accepted the Tricon Award, the VMA's version of the life achievement award, in a silver jacket with matching mask and head ensemble.
Los Angeles designer Candice Cuoco created the overcoat, while Manuel Albarran – who specialises in metal costume design – was responsible for the singer’s pointy bra and choker, which she wore over a Valentino bodsuit.
Deadly Fetish Couture
Lady Gaga wears a Deadly Fetish Couture bra, panties, and leg harness.
During her performances, including one of “Rain on Me” alongside Ariana Grande, the singer had multiple costume changes starting with a futurist sports bra look that she accessorised with an electronic face mask through which she sang lyrics.
Other outfits that she wore on stage included a latex look by Vex Clothing and a BCalla catsuit that was worn with Saint Laurent shoes.
