Kanye West has been criticised for selling overpriced merchandise at California's Coachella festival - which included a pair of socks costing $50 (£38).

Ahead of his “Sunday Service” performance featuring a gospel choir atop a hillside, the rapper put his “church clothes” collection up for sale.

T-shirts were sold for $70 (£53) and some hoodies priced at $225 (£173).

Fans were quick to criticise the high prices.

“50 bucks for some damn socks? Kanye needs to go up for prayer [sic],” one person tweeted.

“Shame! Making money off fans,” added another. “Makes him rich and them poorer.”

The merchandise comes in earthy tones of brown and beige and features slogans such as “Trust God” and “Holy Spirit” prominently emblazoned in circular patterns.

The socks came in beige and black and featured the words “Jesus”, “Walks”, “Church” and “Socks”.

Some fans complained that the clothes were too simple to warrant such high prices.

One person tweeted: “Come on Kanye! ill pay those prices BUT at least make the design for them merch worth it! [sic]”.

Others described the clothes as “boring”, “ridiculous” and “lame”.

In spite of the criticisms, West’s collection proved popular judging by videos posted on Twitter, which show crowds of people flocking to the “Church Clothes” stall at the festival.
