Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Unlike some of the more subdued award shows, the Grammys are known for showcasing the more daring looks of the season, and this year’s show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, was no different.

Lizzo cemented herself early on as one of the best-dressed stars of the night, after arriving on the red carpet in a white strapless Versace gown, diamond necklace and a floor-length white feather boa, while multiple stars took the opportunity to make political statements.

Also among this year's best-dressed was Ariana Grande, who opted for a grey tulle Giambattista Valli ballgown and matching gloves before changing into another gown, Billy Porter, who completed his turquoise jumpsuit with a motorised curtain hat, and Lil Nas X, who shined in a bright pink Versace gown.

The Old Town Road rapper wasn't the only male celebrity to don an outfit in shades of pink, as Shawn Mendes, Common and Tyler the Creator all opted for the colour scheme.

While the dress styles were mixed, various celebrities chose structured gowns for this year's awards show, with pointed shoulder pads, pleats, and ruffles all having a moment in the spotlight.

Celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas also took the opportunity to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant, who died earlier in the day in a helicopter crash. In memory of the basketball legend, the actress decorated the nail of her index finger with the former Lakers player's number, 24.

Last year’s standout moments included Cardi B’s vintage Mugler oyster dress and Janelle Monae’s Jean Paul Gaultier dress, which the singer completed with a statement hat.

Some of the most iconic Grammys fashion moments include Jennifer Lopez’s green leaf-print Versace gown, which she wore to the award show in 2000, and Lady Gaga’s 2018 custom black lace Armani Privé creation, which required several aides to keep straight on the red carpet.

As with years past, the stars of the music industry wowed both with their performances during the night and with their outfit choices – with Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and Lizzo all performing at this year's ceremony.
