From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

From designers simultaneously showcasing their men’s and women’s collections, to gender-free shopping sections in department stores, the way we shop is no longer limited by archaic binary models.

But it’s not just the fashion industry that’s shifting towards the unisex – the beauty world is catching on too, especially when it comes to fragrance.

Unisex scents have been around since time immemorial, but with more and more brands willing to blur the boundaries, the offering is expanding at a rapid rate.

The trend initially peaked in the Nineties when the likes of Calvin Klein and Comme des Garcons pioneered fragrances designed to be worn by any gender.

But ever since then, more luxurious and underground brands have started to catch up, with Tom Ford, Chanel and cult favourite Escentric Molecules creating sublime fragrances that disregard any limitations.

Now, it’s all about those made-to-share scents.

So, if you’re fed up of raiding your partner’s pile of perfumes, take a look at our list of some of the best neutral scents you’ll all love.

Clean, Reserve Skin, £82, Space NK

A fresh and understated fragrance, Clean’s Reserve Skin promises to quickly become your next signature scent.

Designed with top notes of fresh musk, middle notes of warm skin accord and tonka bean, and dry notes of salted praline, it offers a subtle sweetness that lingers on the skin all day long. It’s that holiday skin smell, but better.

Also, just like the entire of Clean’s Reserve range, this fragrance has been created using responsibly sourced ingredients and delivered in environmentally-friendly packaging.

Myrrh & Tonka Cologne, £115, Jo Malone

Fans of Jo Malone will no doubt fall head-over-heels for this sensual scent that’s designed to be worn by any gender, and layered with other colognes.

Sweet and smoky all-in-one, this unique fragrance is made with top notes of lavender and a heart notes of omumbiri myrrh that gives it a warm balsamic quality.

In contrast, the addition of tonka bean offers warm accents of almond, vanilla and aromatic tobacco for an intoxicating scent you just can’t get enough of.

Le Labo, Santal 33, £125, Selfridges

A fragrance that has reached cult status, Le Labo’s Santal 33 has captured the noses of many.

One whiff of this addictive scent and you’ll be hooked. So, what’s all the fuss about?

The key ingredient to this fragrance is sandalwood which gives it a spicy quality, while the addition of floral notes such as iris and violet, as well as leather, give it an unexpectedly light and creamy touch.

Laboratory Perfumes, Tonka, £65, Cult Beauty

Founded in 2011, Laboratory Perfumes is fairly new to the industry, but what a impression it’s already made.

A sensual and elegant fragrance, Tonka is the perfect combination of warm, peppery notes balanced with a slight fruitiness thanks to ingredients like mandarin and the sweet, smokiness of tonka bean and vanilla.

Escentric Molecules 01, £72, Liberty London

Perhaps the most popular unisex fragrance out there, Escentric Molecules’ 01 offers a scientific approach to perfumery that’s loved by all genders, everywhere.

Designed with just one aroma molecule and a mix of other ingredients selected to enhance it and amplify its key qualities, it works with your body’s natural scent to create a whiff that smells different on each wearer.

Powdery, light and comforting, it’s no wonder the likes of Rihanna, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Kate Moss are rumoured to be fans.
