Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Blame it on the fact we’ve all been spending sunny weekends in lockdown sipping on Aperol Spritzes or watching Harry Styles’ suggestive "Watermelon Sugar" music video on repeat - either way, this summer our social media feeds are looking particularly fruity.
In a season that typically sees fashion fans dressed head-to-toe in gingham, linen jumpsuits and sun dresses, nature's natural sweeteners appear to have beaten florals to first place as the latest It print on Instagram for spring/summer 2020.
Having caught the eye of more influencers than we can keep track of, cherry-print pieces in particular are having a sartorial moment, with everyone from Bella Hadid to Hailey Bieber sporting the whimsical motif on strapless tops and square-neck mini dresses.
High street brands such as Ghost and Topshop have followed in the footsteps of Realisation Par’s infamous cherry print wrap dress, which proved so popular that it has been reissued for more than three years in a row. For a casual take on the trend, put a playful seasonal spin on your basics with Victoria Beckham’s all-over cherry print T-shirt. Or, when you finally get the chance to wear your favourite LBD again, inject a little colour with a pair of Ranjana Khan’s cherry-shaped earrings, which are made from luxurious red velvet, green silk and crystals.
This summer, wardrobes are also set to be refreshed with zesty oranges and lemons, with Neon Rose’s entire range of orange print cotton dresses, fittingly named Clemmie, selling out within a matter of hours. For floaty dresses you can wear to picnics in the park or for strolls on the beach, look no further than Borgo De Nor, HVN and Kitri where you will find citrus-covered options with frilled hems, bardot necklines and puff sleeves.
Elsewhere, LA-based brand Staud and high street stalwart H&M are delivering strong top options for those who prefer to wear separates with this linen button-up crop top and boxy tee embellished with fruity embroidery among our favourite picks.
The trend doesn’t just stop at clothes either, with everything from jewellery and bags to bikinis being given the five-a-day treatment. In particular, Zara boasts a robust offering of fruit-themed jewellery this season, from lemon and pineapple-shaped earrings to zesty lime finger rings, while those looking to soak up the sun should consider doing so dressed in Diane Von Furstenberg's lemon-print one-piece.
It’s not hard to see why wearing nature’s bounty on your person is proving such a hit this season. As well as boasting a refreshing colour palette, there’s a timeless and universal appeal that comes with this kind of motif.
Fruit in fashion goes as far back as the 18th century, when aristocracy would wear waistcoats embroidered with berries, while Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana has made the motif a mainstay of its collections with lemons emerging as a particular favourite – not surprising considering they are geographically closest to the Amalfi Coast, where the fragrant fruit is grown on cliff-side terraces.
While midi and mini statement dresses are perhaps the most obvious and wearable choice for your summer wardrobe, if you are looking for alternative ways to incorporate all your fruit salad favourites, bowling shirts are the way to go.
The must-have unisex item of the summer, there plenty of options on offer across the high street right now which all require little fuss when it comes to styling.
Simply throw on this pineapple-print cropped version from Zara with a pair of mom jeans, throw this banana yellow Prada bag over your shoulder and slip on some chunky sandals, and you’ve nailed summer-ready style with a single ensemble.
Whatever your fruit of choice, the trick to making these bold prints look chic and not cartoonish is to keep the rest of your outfit restrained. Try teaming a graphic boxy T-shirt with a pair of cream tailored shorts and simple slip-on flats or wear bold maxi dresses with barely-there sandals and a mini top handle handbag. If you haven't already, now is the time to cut yourself a slice of this trend.
