Is it really worth the hype?
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Ever since Rihanna launched her much-anticipated make-up brand Fenty Beauty, the queues at Harvey Nichols’ London store have showed no signs of slowing as, like many of the celebrity collections that have come before it, it quickly reached cult status.
But, is it really worth the hype?
The whole ethos behind the brand, that it caters to everyone, no matter their skin colour or type, is ultimately what has sent social media into frenzy. That, coupled with the fact that the brand is cruelty free and won’t be available in China – where by law all make-up products must be tested on animals – means it’s not hard to see why beauty buffs are revelling in its launch.
If you don’t fancy joining the extensive queues, we’ve put together our pick of the products that are really worth investing in.
Pro Filt’r Foundation
A product that has won praise from make-up fans and critics around the world, Rihanna’s Pro Filt’r Foundation is available in a whopping 40 shades, meaning it accommodates a huge variety of ethnicities and skin types.
Leaving many brands now desperately trying to catch up, the matte formula gives skin an instantly smooth, shine-free finish that easily builds from medium to full coverage. A word of warning here though, while light and long-wearing it’s seriously quick to set so you need to work quickly if you want to achieve a flawless finish before it dries out.
Match Stix
Available in two different versions – shimmer and matte – the latter is designed to conceal, correct and contour while the other is best used for highlight and blush.
Made to layer, the buildable cream-to-powder formulas are weightless and creamy, meaning they’re easy to blend into the skin with little-to-no creasing or caking. A tad drying when used over the foundation for those with dehydrated skin, we suggest using a wet beauty sponge for best results.
Another great feature about these is the pale pink magnetic packaging which allows them to clip together creating a honeycomb shape. If you’re someone that spends ages rummaging through their make-up bag, then this trick is a serious saviour.
Killawatt Highlighters
Arguably the most talked about product in the collection, Fenty Beauty’s highlighters come in an impressive six shades – four of which are duos. A versatile highlight that can be applied anywhere from the cheeks and chest to the nose and even as eyeshadow – they offer either a subtle radiance or insane glow depending on which hue you choose.
For a full-on finish, Trophy Wife – a brilliant gold pressed powder – should be your go to, however the Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby duo is a beautiful highlight that flatters all skin colours without looking too OTT.
Gloss Bomb
The only lip product in the collection, Fenty Beauty’s Universal Lip Luminizer is intended to suit all skin tones. Taking your lip game to the next level, the nude-rose shade packs a punch with shimmery particles without feeling too sticky and because it’s loaded with shea butter, leaves your smackers feeling kissable.
The supersized, doe-foot applicator also makes swiping the product on super simple and it tastes absolutely delicious – think peaches and cream.
Invisimatte Blotting Paper
Housed in a sleek, lipstick-like tube with a mirror on the side, blotting has never been so chic. Ultra-portable and super-compact, the paper rolls out of the case like aluminium foil which means you can tear off the perfect amount each time – but does it work?
Absolutely. The paper works to lift away shine without affecting your make-up or leaving any residue. The best part is that the case is also refillable.
