Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The warmer months are the perfect time to experiment with your hair. Whether you’re going for a total ‘do-over or simply switching up your style, we’ve got the tips, tricks and products to help you achieve a fashion-forward new look. To get the lowdown on the season’s most-wanted styles, we spoke to Chloe Ascott, master stylist at Hare & Bone.

1.The poker-straight style

A Nineties grunge vibe is still making its presence felt this season, so if you’re bit of a straightening addict, you’re in luck as straight styles are bang on trend. “Sleek, poker-straight hair is set to be a huge trend for 2016, as seen on the SS16 catwalks; think polished, blunt ends and movement through the roots,” Ascott says. “Tuck some hair behind your ear for a super-quick way to update the look.” Keeping your tresses protected is the key here, so be sure to use a generous amount of protection spray before turning up the heat.

You’ll need: straighteners, heat protection spray

2.The sleek pony

This slightly more low-maintenance option is perfect for second-day straight hair that’s all one length. Simply refresh your locks with a spritz of dry shampoo before securing them in a low pony at the bottom of your hairline. Smooth any flyaway strands with hairspray and add a touch of embellishment with a metallic hair clip.

You’ll need: dry shampoo, hairspray, hair band, hair clip

3.The intricate plaited updo

It’s no secret that plaited updos require quite a few clips and grips to keep them secure. In order to boost their staying power, use a touch of texturising spray to give hair a tousled feel. This will not only help keep the plaits in place but will add extra body - especially handy if your hair is naturally thinner. Top tip: achieve the French-plait effect in half the time by plaiting hair into pigtails and looping each round either side of the head before concealing the ends under each other for a seamless look.

You’ll need: texturising spray, hair clips

4.The Eighties quiff

“After years of middle partings it’s good to see a return to the side fringe,” Ascott says. If you’ve opted for the side fringe this season then an Eighties tomboy-style quiff is the perfect way to shake things up. Plumping powder will help give your roots the lift they need to achieve this look. Then simply side-part hair before creating a quiff on the largest side of the parting using your fingers and securing with two clips. Top tip: if you cross one clip over the other it creates a more stable base for styles. And for added hold, a touch of hairspray will do the trick.

You’ll need: plumping powder, grips, hairspray

5.The grown-up pigtail

Banish bad-hair days with this easy-to-achieve style. Forget any suggestions of schoolgirls; the pigtail has gone all grown up this season. This one works best with second-day hair; a touch of frizz-taming spray will help to make locks more manageable. Part hair evenly in the centre before making two bunches. If you want a neater, more precise plait then secure each bunch with a hair band before plaiting. If you prefer a more laidback look, then leave the hairbands out and plait each bunch loosely before securing the ends. For extra 90s appeal, try adding a velvet Alice band.

You’ll need: comb, frizz-taming spray, hair bands, Alice band
