From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

On Sunday 28 February the world will see an array of stars descending on the red carpet of the 88th Academy Awards, where Hollywood is expected to appear in their best attire.

While the Hollywood glamour is something to be obsessed about, the world has also been obsessed with some looks that are just unforgettable - think of Bjork's swan dress at the 2001 Oscars (she was even dropping golden eggs on the red carpet). It was the inspiration for many stand-up comedies.

Cher made headlines in 1988, too, when she wore a beaded black outfit with a cape by Bob Mackie, matched with a two-foot headpiece, reportedly made of more than 800 rooster feathers.

In 1989, Demi Moore designed her very own outfit. It was a tapestry-lined gown and lace-edged cycling shorts. Kim Basinger got everyone confused in 1990 when she appeared on the red carpet in a scary full-skirted white gown with a single sleeve alongside ger brother - wait, was she marrying her brother?

And Celine Dion risked it all in a backwards tuxedo from John Galliano for Christian Dior, matched with blingy Ray Bans and a Stephen Jones hat.

What will be seeing on the red carpet this year?
