Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Fashion: What a suite smell!

Many are looking forward to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee next year, but first there's a big birthday for another of our grande dames. London's Dorchester, hostelry to the rich and famous, is 80 this year – and is celebrating with a new range of spa packages and products. Aromatherapy Associates has created a bespoke scent for the hotel's birthday box, made with cedarwood, frankincense and sandalwood. As well as featuring in gift sets, the fragrance will be used in the Anniversary Ritual massage at its world-famous spa. £150 for 80 minutes, dorchestercollection.com

Face to watch: Henry Lloyd-Hughes

It's been a true summer of love for this spiffingly-tached thesp – having reprised his role as the Inbetweeners' nemesis in their Cretian, big-screen adventure, he'll be living it up further in rave-era flick Weekender (out 2 September)

Lexpionage: Direlect (n)

A variety of speech egregiously different to the one it is trying to imitate. Mostly peculiar to Hollywood's finest, eg Anne Hathaway as a New Yorkshirewoman in One Day

Katie Price, Hulk Hogan, Ellen Page, Paul Daniels

1. Fennel is the best!

2. BTW Mam is a chain smoking, lard cooking, chocolate and sweet eating, fried food woman. It's all wrong but she has beaten the odds.

3. I love getting excited! I am excited!

4. Perfect morning, my feet hit the ground and all I could think about was being grateful and thank you for perfect health, abundance, greatness

App watch: Fundedapps

It all goes a bit meta with this entrepreneurial app that allows you to pitch your app idea to a panel of developers. Those whose ideas make the cut will then receive £250 and 25 per cent of net profits from the resulting sale of the app. Free from iTunes store and Android Market, but £1.49 to submit a suggestion

On the radar: Because some things are still worth getting excited about...

Music

Lady Gaga/Wild Beasts

Yes, you read that right – marvel at the unlikeliest combo in pop, as the cerebral Kendal four-piece remix the Queen of shock-pop's latest single to magisterially eerie effect. bit.ly/oPpdAt

Dating: Doing Something

This delightful new match-maker cuts a cutesy swathe through the competition while putting an emphasis on activities – you can even spin the "Wheel of Date" if you're feeling adventurous.doingsomething.co.uk

Film: 'Carnage'

We can detect the sweet smell of awards season in this adaptation of Yasmina Reza's middle-class rage-a-thon starring Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and John C Reilly. bit.ly/rnMYcG
