Mellow Yellow: How to wear spring 2017’s optimistic fashion trend

The unexpected colour dominated the runway this season

For years, women have seen yellow as a shade that does nothing for their skin tones, eyes or hair but the runway is unwavering when it comes to the sun-drenched hue.

But, aside from the catwalk, it has endured as a firm favourite on the red carpet too. Think Cate Blanchett in Valentino, Rosamund Pike in Alexander McQueen and who can forget RiRi’s imperial yellow, fur trimmed number at the Met Gala.

Perhaps then, it’s time to reconsider this thorny hue and serve your look sunny side up this spring.

From fizzy sherbert to mustard to pastel Fifties lemon, yellow ran the gamut on the runway proving that there is, after all, an option out there for everyone, no matter your skin tone.

At Simone Rocha, shades of buttercup yellow adorned embroidered flowers complimenting the dreamy innocence of the collection. Here, it was all about pairing the colour with sheer, floaty and feminine fabrics like broderie anglaise, organza and tulle.

Similarly, for Bottega Veneta the shade lined a creamy leather shirt dress that was cinched at the waist and Chloe offered up an array of mustard two pieces bound by pleats, frills and sheer tiers.

For a cheery, albeit theatrical shot of colour, Jason Wu mized polished sportswear silhouettes with bright highlighter yellow. Nonetheless, the sleevless dress it decked sustained a wispy, girlish edge.

It seems here, the key to pulling of a cheery pop of yellow is to embrace gauzy, romantic silhouettes.

IRL, it can be pretty tricky to wear but the runway has proved that, despite its reputation, you can pull off ochre, goldenrod, saffron or chartreuse, without looking jaundiced.
