Winter warmers: What to wear to bonfire night
It’s the perfect excuse to add some woolly cheer to your wardrobe
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Whether you’re celebrating outside with a glass of mulled wine or watching from a city rooftop, bonfire-night festivities are about much more than straw dummies and firework displays.
That’s because, for the more sartorially dedicated among us at least, it’s also an opportunity to inject your winter wardrobe with a heavy dose of cosiness.
As temperatures plummet, this weekend marks the perfect excuse to invest in super-soft scarves, gloves and trendy hats to ward off that winter chill because, while it’s important to stay snug, there’s no excuse for not doing it in style.
A cold-weather mainstay, accessories are a great way to shelter from the cold and luckily the high street is throwing up a whole host of fashion favourites that promise to keep you warm whatever the weather throws at you.
Feeling the chill? The first thing we reach for as the temperatures begin to drop is a scarf and this season they come in luxe jewel shades and, as always, classic autumnal hues like mustard and burgundy.
Similarly, gloves are a great idea but while leather sets might look the part, investing in a cashmere pair means they’ll see you through more than one November.
To top it all off add a hat into the mix too but rather than taking out that same old beanie, go with something a little more stylish this time around. Aside from pom-pom trimmed beanies, berets are in the midst of a sartorial comeback and are available in everything from fluffy felt to luxe leather.
When it comes to coats, the choice is yours but remember to bundle up in something that does more than just look good, such as oversized teddy bear borg or a rock ‘n’ roll parka.
Likewise, if you’re celebrating in a mucky field then you might want to give high heels a miss. Instead, opt for a pair of low, block heel or flat boots that won’t leave you stuck in the mud.
