Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Fashion label Boden has launched a new coat collection inspired by celebrated, historical women from the arts.

The new range – the slogan for which is: "Behind every great coat is a great woman" – is a 30-piece capsule collection which aims to "embrace British creativity".

Each coat in the AW19 collection is named and styled after a particular woman, including the likes of novelist Jane Austen; Celtic queen Boudica; mathematician and writer Ada Lovelace and satirical novelist and playwright Frances Burney.

While it is doubtful that the esteemed women selected as honorees of the collection would have worn apparel of a similar design in their heyday, Johnnie Boden, founder of the brand, said he "loved the idea" behind the clothing line, having always been "inspired and surrounded by strong women".

Boden added that to his "great shame" he hadn't heard of a couple of the women inspired by the collection. "They are all, in their different way, amazing," he added.

The Austen Coat, which retails at £220, comes in navy or red and has been designed with a faux fur, leopard-print collar.

The fashion label states that while Austen may have had to hide her identity as a writer – having never attributed her name to any of her novels during her lifetime – there was "no concealing her sparkling wit and unforgettable characters", hence the bold nature of the coat's design.

The Lovelace Coat, which is available for £198, comes in blue and green, or navy and pink.

The coat's design is inspired by Ada Lovelace, who was a mathematician and writer in the 19th century, in addition to being one of the world's first computer programmers.

"This unconventional woman was known as the 'enchantress of numbers'. Her father (the poet, Lord Byron), may not have wanted her to study maths and science but there was no stopping her brilliant mind," the brand states.
