From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

There’s no better excuse than the New Year to stock up on a whole host of makeup and skincare but, with so many new products launching every day, it can be tricky to know what’s really worth investing in.

Luckily, Instagram’s number one beauty authority on new makeup launches, TrendMood1, has got you covered.

The account recently released a series of polls to find out which products its community of 1.2m beauty-obsessives thought were the best of 2018.

The votes covered everything from individual products such as foundation and lip products to skincare and the most coveted beauty brand of the year.

Here, we take a look at the winning list, courtesy of the collective voice of TrendMood1’s followers.

Foundation

A great foundation can make or break the rest of our makeup and it seems there’s one particular bottle that outperforms the rest.

According to the poll, Too Faced’s This Way Foundation was voted the best of 2018, beating Estee Lauder’s Double wear to the top spot.

The foundation, which retails for £29, has received rave reviews online for its fresh medium-to-full coverage and ‘airbrushed’ finish.

Concealer

A product used to disguise everything from under-eye circles to redness and pesky pimples, a good concealer should offer high coverage, be durable and match your skin’s base and undertones.

For these reasons, users voted Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer as their winner with an impressive 78 per cent of the vote, beating competitor Too Faced’s Born This Way Sculpting Concealer.

But, don’t just take Instagram’s word for it. This product has proved so poplar that one is sold every 12 seconds.

Lip product

Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, £16, Harvey Nichols

Since the launch of Rihanna’s much-anticipated make-up brand Fenty Beauty, its products have quickly reached cult status. But, is it really worth the hype?

It seems so because Instagram users voted the brand’s Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer as the best lip product of 2018, beating Jeffree Star's Velour Liquid Lipsticks.

It also won Product of the Year with an impressive 65 per cent of the vote.

The gloss, which now comes in three shades, promises to make your lips look instantly fuller and smoother “with a non-sticky formula that’s super shiny”.

Eyeshadow palette

A single eyeshadow might suffice for some but for many makeup obsessives a palette that’s packed with a myriad of shades is the only way to go.

The winner in this sections was the James Charles Artistry Palette created in collaboration between beauty brand Morphe and YouTuber James Charles with 66 per cent of the vote.

The palette, which is filled with a rainbow of riotous pigments, also won Best Collaboration of the Year.

Much to the distain of UK beauty buffs, the winner of 2018’s best skincare product is currently only available in the US.

Receiving 55 per cent of the total vote, users said Tatcha’s The Water Cream was their favourite product.

The product, which is made with Japanese wild rose, leopard lily and a dash of 33-karat gold, is beauty website Sephora’s top-selling moisturiser and previously sold out twice in just one month.
