From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

However, many believe that luxury brand Balenciaga may have taken things a step too far with one of their latest designs.
The fashion house’s “t-shirt shirt”, from its autumn 2018 collection, has bemused the internet, both for its aesthetic and its hefty price.
Costing a staggering £935, the t-shirt shirt is exactly what the title suggests; a t-shirt with a long-sleeved buttoned shirt pinned to the front.
According to the Balenciaga website where the top is available to buy, the wearer has the option to wear the t-shirt with the shirt hanging from the front or to wear the shirt with the t-shirt hanging from the back.
As can be expected, the top has been heavily mocked across social media.
“I thought this Balenciaga shirt was a joke… It’s real and it’s $1,290,” one person wrote on Twitter.
Someone on Instagram described the top as “nonsense,” while another described it as “straight garbage.”
One person made a point of highlighting the expression on the male model’s face, tweeting: “Even the model knows Balenciaga trippin with this shirt look at his face lmao.”
Some took this talking point as an opportunity to be creative, with one individual making his own version of the t-shirt shirt by using sellotape.
“Hey @Balenciaga, I just made my own double shirt and it didn’t cost thousands of dollars!” he wrote in a tweet that’s garnered almost 5,000 likes.
This isn’t the first time the eccentricity of Balenciaga’s designs has received attention for the wrong reasons.
In October last year, the brand was ridiculed for selling an “embossed leather skirt” that bore a striking resemblance to a rubber car mat.
A Twitter user has created a thread featuring several unconventional Balenciaga products, including a shopping bag worth £1,280, a shirt that’s been combined with a plastic film for £735 and a jacket that’s been drastically pulled to one side that’s available for £1,775.
