From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

German company and Whirlpool subsidiary Bauknecht will debut its energy efficient kitchen of the future, GREENKITCHEN 2.0, at the Living Kitchen trade show in Germany from January 18-23. The company estimates that the entire GREENKITCHEN 2.0 system will reduce energy costs by around 70 percent and will be available in 2013.

The GREENKITCHEN 2.0 system is composed of six Bauknecht appliance prototypes. Some of these, such as the 4Pure water dispenser and the Bauknecht solar collector, will become available later this year, while others, such as the H20 induction oven and the H20 dishwasher , will be available in 2012. Baucknecht plans to launch the final appliance, the Resource Assistant, in 2013.

These appliances reduce energy usage by using only the amount of power and water that is absolutely necessary and re-using waste products. For example, any waste water can be collected, filtered and then heated using the solar heater; this water is then stored and used later in another appliance such as the H20 dishwasher. These appliances will also work in conjunction with the energy saving smart grid.

Other environmentally friendly energy saving appliances being exhibited at Living Kitchen include the ActiveWater Eco 2 dishwasher from Bosch and a range of CircoTherm ovens from Neff.

Energy saving, intelligent appliances are fast becoming the major trend in kitchen goods. At the recent tech exhibition International CES (January 6-9), white goods manufacturers such as LG and Whirlpool, among others, released a number of environmentally friendly appliances.

2011 marks the first year of Living Kitchen; after this year's event, organizers expect to hold the exhibition once every two years. The exhibition runs concurrently to, and in conjunction with, the 28th IMM Cologne (January 18-23), which showcases the latest and most innovative household designs and attracts around 100,000 visitors per-year.

Later in the year, household appliances, furniture and accessories will be exhibited at the Ambiente trade show in Germany (February 11-15).
