Vipp Shelter: Danish retailer creates idyllic retreat that can be moved anywhere

The micro-dwelling is inspired by the simplicity of submarines

Panoramic views of nature allow owners a retreat from city life (Vipp)

Danish retailer Vipp, famous for its signature pedal bins, has created a flat-pack micro-dwelling designed to give owners an escape from the chaos of urban life.

Shelter, the 55sq m all-inclusive nature retreat, comes fully equipped with Vipp products including everything from lighting to linen, from table to toilet brush, and from shelves to soap dispenser. The only thing you need to worry about is where to put it.

Vipp’s CEO, Kasper Egelund, has described the concept as a “battery-charging station for humans”. The simple steel grid structurally supports the two-level space, where only the bathroom-and-bed loft is hidden from the main living space. The design offers panoramic views, and the opportunity to “sleep under the stars”.

Designer Morten Bo Jensen said the product was inspired by large-volume objects such as airplanes, ferries and submarines – objects stripped of all unnecessary features. The outer steel grid contains 10,000 screws and according to Vipp, “every single one serves a purpose”.

The furniture in the pop-up dwelling is intentionally dark, in order to keep the focus on nature.

Prefabricated north of Copenhagen with a production time of six months and three to five days of installation, the Vipp shelter can be yours for 485,000 euros (£432,900).
