This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.
The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

If, like us, you’re unable to hang a mirror or decorate a room without first lusting over perfectly-poised homeware photos on Pinterest, you’ll be happy to learn the social media platform has just announced its biggest home decor trends in 2019.
The ‘Pinterest 100: The top trends for 2019’ outlines the new year’s trends that everyone will be pinning and sharing, covering everything from fashion and food to travel and health.
Analysing search behaviour of more than 250 million users around the world, Pinterest has honed in on what’s increasingly peaked our interest for a period of six months or longer this year to find out the next biggest trends.
When it comes to home decor, homebodies are searching everything from day-to-day DIY projects (which makes up 83 per cent of home searches) to remodels and landscaping.
So, without further ado, here are Pinterest’s top home decor trends for 2019. Paint brushes at the ready, people!
1. Yellow fever
Big Bird. The Beatles’ submarine. Rihanna’s Met Gala 2015 ‘pizza’ dress. Our love of yellow shows no sign of stopping with searches for mustard yellow reaching over 45 per cent this year. When it comes to decor, 2019 is the time to embrace bold mustard yellow walls and experiment with accents of colour with accessories (think pillows, throws, frames etc).
2. Light it up
Is there anything more soothing on a cold winter’s evening than snuggling up on the sofa with a hot chocolate to the faint sound of crackling wood? It seems not, as searches for contemporary fireplaces are up 763 per cent.
3. Woolly walls
Wrapping up for winter is no longer confined to the realms of fashion but also home decoration this season, with people now layering up their walls in fabric. Searches for textile art have increased a whopping 1718 per cent.
4. Get edgy
In need of a fresh decorating angle in the new year? Then it’s time you consider adding some colourful geometric shapes into your home, especially given search is up more than 225 per cent.
5. Mind the spike
The flora choice of millennials across the world, succulents are growing in interest (we didn’t think it could get any more popular either) in the new year, with searches for cactus arrangements up 235 per cent. Your windowsill is in for a treat.
6. Grow up
The only way is up in 2019 as vertical gardens are on the rise (no pun intended), with searches for wall fauna up 287 per cent. Floor-to-ceiling green is the perfect solution for those short on space and in need of indoor nature.
7. Do over
Save the back pain of tearing up old floor tiles next year as it appears Pinterest lovers are increasingly interested in giving their floors a makeover with a simple lick of paint. Searches for ‘painted floor tiles’ have risen 1276 per cent, with people painting parquet floors with bold colours and mosaic patterns.
8. Go bold
The days of magnolia-hued walls are well-and-truly over, at least, for some home lovers in the new year. Whether it’s a tropical leaf or a bright print, it’s time to embrace your inner Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen as searches for bold print wallpaper are up 401 per cent.
9. Deep dive
Can't afford a private swimming pool in your back garden? Fear not as searches for natural swimming pools are up a whopping 262 per cent.
10. Time for tin
Tin has never been more ‘in’, with Pinterest searches for ‘tin interiors’ up a staggering 563 per cent. From statement wallpapers to tin kitchenware, the vintage aesthetic will add a subtle hint of luxury and nostalgia to any room.
The increased searches on each trend are year on year, from January – September 2017 to January – September 2018.
