From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Dame Helen Mirren has shared a photo of herself wearing a protective face mask and safety goggles during a flight.
On Sunday, the 74-year-old posted a selfie on Instagram showing her wearing PPE as she sat on board a plane. The Queen actor ensured her mask covered both her nose and mouth and even tucked the top of the face covering underneath the large goggles.
Mirren completed her off-duty look with a white knitted sweater and monochrome LA Dodgers baseball cap. She jokingly captioned the photo: “It’s a look!”
The Winchester star’s followers praised her for taking the necessary safety precautions, with one writing: “Oh thank God, someone besides me wearing goggles and wearing them correctly over the mask, also worn correctly. Full marks.”
Another person wrote: “A great look! Everyone should be copying it,” while a third added that Mirren was “serving PPE fierceness”.
Other followers joked that the PPE also served as a disguise for celebrities to wear when out in public. “At least you won’t be recognised,” one person commented.
It is not known where Mirren was flying to but on Friday 3 July, the government released a list of countries where, from 10 July, travellers would no longer have to self-isolate for two weeks upon return to England.
Previously, a “double lock” prevented nearly all international travel, with the Foreign Office (FCO) advising against all non-essential travel abroad.
In May, Mirren shared a heartfelt video to celebrate International Nurses’ Day in which she praised NHS workers for their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Today is International Nurses’ Day. I work for L’Oreal which has the famous slogan, ‘Because you’re worth it’. Well today of all days we can say with our hands on our hearts, to the nurses, you are worth it,” Mirren said.
“‘Thank you for everything you have done, for your courage and for everything you will be doing. In the future, when you come to negotiate your pay rises, you can say, all together, very loudly, ‘because we are worth it’.”
The British actor is not the first celebrity to share photos of herself out and about in full PPE.
Earlier this year, British supermodel Naomi Campbell was pictured travelling across the US while wearing a full hazmat suit, goggles, plastic gloves and a face mask, while actor Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Selena Gomez have also shared photos of themselves wearing PPE on social media.
From 15 June in England, it has been mandatory to wear a face covering on public transport, with people who refuse to wear one liable to fines of £100.
Scotland introduced the same compulsory rules on 22 June for public transport and will make wearing face coverings in shops mandatory from 10 July.
In Wales, people are being recommended to wear face coverings in spaces where social distancing is not possible, but it is not compulsory. Face coverings are set to become mandatory on public transport in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, but for now they are only encouraged.
