Katy Perry has opened up about her mental health amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

On Tuesday, the pregnant pop star reflected on her state of mind during the global health crisis and admitted that she was experiencing “waves of depression”.

“Sometimes I don’t know what’s worse trying to avoid the virus or the waves of depression that come with this new norm,” she wrote on Twitter.

The tweet seemingly struck a chord with many of her followers and received more than 76,000 likes and 13,000 retweets.

The post was also flooded with messages of support from fans and celebrity friends including fashion designer Vera Wang who commented: “Hang in there firework. Love ya,” alongside emoji of an explosion and a red heart, while comedian Rosie O'Donnell added: “totally feel ya.”

Concerned fans also urged the 35-year-old singer to try and stay positive with one person reminding Perry that she had so much to look forward to, including the birth of her daughter with Orlando Bloom.

“Just remember the little light of your life will be in your arms soon,” the Twitter user wrote.

Another person added: “OMG pls stay positive we are here for you [sic].”

This is not the first time Perry has opened up about her mental health struggles.

In January, the "Dark Horse" singer admitted to experiencing depression and noted that 2017 and 2018 were some of her toughest years.

“I became depressed and I did not want to get out of bed,” Katy said in an interview with Vogue India. “In the past, I had been able to overcome it, but this time something happened that made me fall down too many flights of stairs. I had to really go on a mental health journey.”

Perry went on to say that she had plenty of support during this time, adding that in addition to seeking therapy and trying meditation, she had been able to lean on her partner Bloom.

“He’s an anchor who holds me down, and he’s very real,” Perry said, adding that Bloom was on a “spiritual journey” of his own.

The pop star also said she wished more celebrities would be open to discussing depression and mental health, saying: “We talk about all our different organs but never talk about our brain, which keeps us functioning the most.”

Perry first revealed that she and Bloom were expecting their first child together on 5 March with the release of her new single “Never Worn White”, off her upcoming fifth studio album.

She later announced that the couple are expecting a baby girl with an Instagram photo of Bloom smiling at the camera with his face covered in pink-coloured cream.

The image was taken as part of the couple’s gender reveal and posted alongside the caption: “It’s a girl” and two pink heart emojis.
