From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. As more people self-isolate in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, they may worry that they’ll be unable to get their hands on essential food and household items as demand increases.

On Friday, Britney Spears announced she is taking part in an online challenge in order to try and help people in need, named the #DoYourPartChallenge.

In a video shared on her Instagram account, the singer explained that her younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, nominated her to take part in the challenge.

The challenge involves people private messaging the person taking part — in this instance, Britney Spears — if they are need of items such as food or baby’s nappies.

The person doing the challenge then selects three people to help, in addition to nominating three other individuals to participate.

“So our world is going through such hard times right now and my sister just nominated me to help people,” Spears said in the video.

“Whether it’s with food or I’m getting your child diapers or whatever it is, DM me and I will help you out.”

Spears added that the three other people she chose to nominate to take part were Will Smith, her partner Sam Asghari and Kate Hudson.

Asghari expressed his excitement over the initiative in the comment section of Spears’ video, writing: “Amazing let’s get this things started! [sic]”

Several fans praised Spears for her kind act, with one person describing the singer as a “philanthropic queen” and another remarking: “OMG that’s so kind!”

None of Spears’ nominees, Smith, Asghari and Hudson, have yet taken part in the #DoYourPartChallenge on their social media channels.

However, a couple of days ago Hudson shared a post in tribute to healthcare workers.

“Thank you healthcare workers! We love you and appreciate you!!!” the actor wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of a doctor holding up a sign that reads: “I stayed at work for you. You stay at home for us!”

If you have any coronavirus symptoms, contact the online NHS 111 service and do not visit your GP or hospital.
